Community Nutrition Promotion Supervisory/
Food and Nutrition Administration, Ministry of Health

Is responsible for two departments:

  1. The Nutrition Research and Field Studies Department
  2. The Community Nutrition Education Department

Both departments are working as a team collaborating together to achieve the main goals and objectives set by the Community Nutrition Promotion Supervisory of the Food and Nutrition Administration.

The Nutrition Research and Field Studies conducted are related to community nutrition issues, to support strategic, evidence-based decision making approach toward combating nutrition related health problems in Kuwait.

The Kuwait Nutrition Surveillance System (KNSS) is a nation-wide Nutrition Surveillance system run by the Community Nutrition Supervisory since 2001 until now, with consultation provided through CDC and WHO/EMRO.

KNSS is intended to provide data that are used to monitor health and nutritional status of Kuwaiti population. The data can be used by professionals and decision-makers to:

  1. Identify prevalent nutrition-related problems;
  2. Identify high risk groups;
  3. Monitor trends;
  4. Target resources for program planning; and
  5. Evaluate the effectiveness of interventions.

The Nutrition education programs which are conducted by the Community Nutrition Education Department are directed toward all community groups starting from infants with the program of breastfeeding promotion and for school children with healthy school nutrition programs in addition to the national overweight and obesity control program, also doing effective collaboration with other health promoting programs of Ministry of Health.

Both departments’ teams are collaborating effectively in related issues with other stakeholders e.g. Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research, Kuwait University and others.

Audit of the plan of action of the Food and Nutrition Administration is one of the main tasks of the Community Nutrition Promotion Supervisory.
